Our History:
Upon the waters of Spring Creek near Pinchem (Todd County) Kentucky; “brethren feeling the necessity of a meeting in this community (and having no church house) came to this place and built a brush arbor(timber frame with leaves and brush as a roof).” In August of 1887, they “obtained the services of Brother W B Wright who conducted a meeting of eleven days which was largely attended, with a result of twenty-three conversions.”
After the gospel meeting, a congregation was organized with 35 members. Within 45 days they had invested $30 for one acre of land at the sight of the brush arbor. Within 60 days they began the actual construction of the present building. Construction began October 17, 1887 and the building was completed in March 1888, for about a thousand dollars. “On the fifth Lord’s Day in April” the building was dedicated. W B Wright preached the first sermon in the building on the last Sunday of April 1888. There was more building construction in 1959 and renovations have been completed as needed since that time. The Fellowship Hall was built in 2015 and is enjoyed by all in the congregation.
The first elders at Pleasant Grove, Acton “Bill” Cohoon and Nat Penick, were appointed May 27, 1973. Three deacons, Eddie Reagan, Randal Higgins and Lawrence Killebrew, were appointed shortly thereafter. Since that time, Pleasant Grove has continuously had elders and deacons leading the congregation. Currently there are four elders and four deacons, serving the congregation.
The Church of Christ at Pleasant Grove seeks to be just that, Christ’s body, Christians, in this community. It is our aim to restore His body in this community in conformity with that found on the pages of the New Testament and follow its teachings. We invite you, and Christ invites you, to take the scriptural steps necessary to become a citizen of, and be added to, His Kingdom and be a part of that effort in this community.
